Caravan Covers in Australia — Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

by Paul 10 May 2026 0 Comments

Australia has one of the highest caravan ownership rates in the world. With over 750,000 registered caravans and counting, the grey nomad culture — and the younger family adventure travel scene that's grown up alongside it — is a defining feature of how Australians explore their own extraordinary backyard.

But caravans are expensive. A basic entry-level van starts at $30,000–$50,000. A well-equipped family tourer can easily top $100,000. Yet despite this investment, many caravan owners store their vans completely exposed between trips, leaving them vulnerable to UV degradation, mould, and weather damage that shortens the van's life and hammers its resale value.

A quality caravan cover is one of the smartest accessories you can buy.

The Problem with Leaving Your Caravan Uncovered

When a caravan sits in storage — whether that's months between holidays, or a year-plus if the family schedule gets busy — the effects of exposure accumulate steadily:

UV degradation: Australia's sun doesn't spare fibreglass. UV rays break down the clear coat on fibreglass panels, leading to chalking, fading, and in severe cases, microscopic cracking that allows moisture to penetrate the laminate structure. Once delamination begins, it's an expensive repair.

Oxidation on aluminium and steel: Roof rails, ladder rungs, and chassis components all oxidise over time. In coastal storage environments, this process is dramatically accelerated.

Roof contamination: Caravans left uncovered accumulate bird droppings, leaf tannins, and airborne industrial residues. These aren't just unsightly — they're chemically reactive. Bird droppings in particular are highly acidic and can etch through clear coat finishes if left for weeks.

Mould and mildew on awning fabric: If your van has a roll-out awning, uncovered storage allows moisture and organic matter to accumulate in the fold — a perfect environment for mould growth.

Types of Caravan Covers: Full vs Roof-Only

Full Caravan Cover

A full wrap-around cover protects the entire van from roof to wheels. These are the most comprehensive option and are ideal for long-term storage. They're typically made from non-breathable weatherproof fabric or breathable fabric (for areas with high condensation risk).

The main challenge with full covers is fitting and removal — they're large, heavy, and can be a two-person job. They also need ventilation points to prevent condensation build-up underneath.

Caravan Roof Cover

A roof-only cover is a popular compromise. It protects the most vulnerable surfaces — the fibreglass roof, roof vents, solar panels, and air conditioning units — while being much easier to fit and remove single-handedly.

Cacatua's Caravan Roof Cover is designed specifically for this use case. It covers the top surface and drapes down the sides sufficiently to protect the upper panels and windows, with windproof elastic side straps that secure firmly without tying. It's a practical choice for semi-regular users who want meaningful protection without the complexity of a full cover.

What to Look for in a Caravan Cover

1. Fabric Quality

For caravan covers, material quality is critical. The cover sits exposed to all weather for potentially months at a time, and unlike a BBQ cover (which you can bring inside), it needs to function reliably through all conditions.

420D Oxford cloth is the minimum for a caravan roof or full cover — it provides the resistance to puncturing, abrasion, and UV degradation that lighter fabrics can't match. Some premium covers use marine-grade Oxford, which adds salt resistance and a higher waterproof rating.

Cacatua's caravan covers use heavy-duty Oxford cloth with a PU waterproof coating rated for Australian conditions.

2. Windproof Design

Australia is windy. A caravan cover without secure fastening will be halfway down the street after the first decent gale. Look for:

  • Elastic side straps that run underneath the van
  • Multiple securing points spaced along the body
  • Non-slip inner coating to prevent the cover from walking during wind gusts

3. Breathability vs Waterproofing

This is a genuine trade-off. Fully waterproof covers (with PU-coated non-breathable fabric) provide the best moisture protection in rain, but can trap condensation in high-humidity environments. Breathable covers allow vapour to escape but provide slightly less rain protection.

For most Australian storage situations — particularly those involving occasional rainfall rather than persistent damp — a quality waterproof cover with vented panels is the right choice.

4. Custom Fit by Length

Caravans range from compact 14ft single-axle vans to massive 30ft+ fifth-wheelers. A cover that doesn't match your van's length will either gap along the sides (allowing water in) or pool dangerously on the roof (adding weight and stress). Always measure your van from hitch to tail before selecting a size.

How to Apply a Caravan Roof Cover Safely

  1. Clean the roof first. Bird droppings and debris under the cover act as abrasives and can scratch the surface. Use a long-handled brush and caravan-safe cleaner.
  2. Work from front to back. Unfold the cover on the roof and spread progressively toward the rear.
  3. Secure straps before stepping away. Even a brief gust can send an unsecured cover flying — and potentially damaging the van or a neighbouring vehicle.
  4. Check tension monthly during long storage. UV exposure gradually stretches elastic straps and loosens previously secure fastenings.

The Storage Situation: Are You Making the Most of a Good Spot?

Many caravan owners pay for undercover or shed storage, which reduces the need for a cover significantly. But not everyone has that option — or can justify the ongoing cost. For outdoor driveway or paddock storage, a quality cover is simply non-negotiable.

Even in undercover facilities, roof covers are still useful for protecting from dust, bird activity (facilities often have open-sided structures), and the occasional dripping ceiling during heavy rain.

Keep Your Van Road-Ready

A caravan that's properly covered between trips requires less pre-departure cleaning, less polishing, and less remedial repair. It's simply in better condition when you hitch up and head off — which means more time enjoying the road and less time dealing with maintenance.
